"Bizkaiko Txakolina, please" was the slogan of the popular wine tasting events which were held in Bilbao and Santurtzi during May so that Biscayans could better recognise and appreciate our wines.
The events this year were held in Bilbao, on the El Arenal Quay (5 and 6 May), and in Santurtzi, in the Gernika square (12 and 13 May). For the first time Bizkaiko Txakolina has organised two events aimed at the consumer, with the intention that they sample and appreciate the txakolis from the 18 Biscayan wineries which have obtained the greatest production for this season.
The event planning of both events was similar: for 5 Euros one could purchase a pack consisting of a wineglass engraved with our logo, two tickets to drink those txakolis and a practical wine glass holder. It also included a special coin which could be cashed in throughout the entire month of May for another txakolí purchased from the establishments that had joined the promotion thanks to the agreements reached with the Merchants Association of the Casco Viejo (Old Town) and Santurtzi Gastronomika (“Gastronomical Association of Santurtzi”).
Purchasers of the packs have also been able to sample products offered by the Artisan Canning Association of the Basque Coast, and to attend wine tasting sessions given by the sommeliers Patxi Zabala and Bittor San Miguel.
This initiative, carried out with the collaboration of the Provincial Council of Biscay, the Basque Government and Ipar Kutxa, the Regulatory Council intends to bring to the attention of the general public the variety and sheer quality of Biscayan txakolis. Wines that are beginning to be considered as among the best and most original white wines on the peninsula. Specifically, the 2011 vintage has been described by specialist critics as “the best quality vintage in its entire history”.
